The Panther’s Rival by Emilia Hartley

  Why Was Kara With Ratty?

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. This is a book about secrets – often that are not explained or discovered. I have read and loved many of Emilia Hartley’s stories about shifters. This book is well written but seems to be much darker than her other books. Merk is a panther shifter with a past full of secrets and he has left his home to make a new start in life in Florida. The town is run by the Fairbrother wolf pack and Kara’s, a teacher at the high school, used to go out with Ratty the ‘king’ wolf but he doesn’t accept that she has dumped him. I found it very difficult to understand why Kara would even acknowledge Ratty never mind going out with him when she seems so well balanced and sensible. Merk is fortunate to get a job at the school being the coach and it’s whilst at work that he meets Kara. They flirt so easily together but Merk and Kara both know that they are in no place to have a relationship however much they fancy each other. Her past two boyfriends were the coach at the school and they were basically run out of town and Merk is warned to leave her alone. But Merk has done enough running and isn’t going to leave Kara. Kara just seems too sensible to have anything to do with ratty so either he’s had a personality change or she was being manipulated to go out with him. I would have given it the full five stars as I liked the characters developments and basic storyline but I felt that much more details were needed to really bring this story alive. Having said that I will be looking forward to Emilia’s next book.
